At Rising Sun Campers, we love creating campervans not just for people, but for their four-legged companions too. A well-designed dog-friendly campervan conversion means your pup can travel, rest, and enjoy the journey comfortably and safely. Here are five ideas to make your van a dog’s ideal home on wheels.
One of the most important things is giving your dog a safe, secure space for travel and sleep. You could incorporate a custom crate under the bed platform, or design a retractable “dog zone” that doubles as storage when not in use. Use breathable materials, padding, and ventilation. Access from inside the van and via the rear doors makes life easier for both of you.
With muddy paws, hair and the occasional spill, your van’s floor needs to be tough and simple to maintain. Use vinyl, rubber, or marine-grade laminate flooring that’s water-resistant and easy to rinse or wipe clean. Add a non-slip textured surface (or mat) in your dog’s area so they won’t slide around when you’re driving or braking.
Dogs can’t regulate temperature like humans, so keeping a van well ventilated is essential. Include roof vents, screened windows, side vents and even a small 12 V fan near the dog bed area. If your van has a heating system (e.g. diesel heater), ensure heat reaches the dog zone, and consider insulation to avoid hot spots in summer or cold drafts in winter.
Nothing disrupts a clean van faster than wet, muddy paws. Install an external wash point or pull-out hose near a door or the rear. A built-in rinse station makes it easy to clean paws before letting your dog in. You could also include a drain tray under the wash area to catch water and reduce mess inside.
Integrate secure dog bowls (or slide-out trays) into your cabinetry so they don’t shift during driving. Include a refill point nearby for convenience. Design storage compartments for food, treats, bowls, waste bags and cleaning supplies all in one accessible zone. That way everything your dog needs is safe, tidy, and right where you need it.
